Essential Homeschool Supplies
Essential Homeschool Supplies That You Will Use Year After Year
Homeschooling is not like school. While you need supplies, you may need things you wouldn’t typically think of. We can reuse many of our supplies year after year, but there are always little things we need to remember to stock up on.
This post will focus on some of the essential homeschool supplies you may need or find beneficial for your homeschool. They are supplies that will make your homeschool run more smoothly or save you money in the grand scheme of things.

The Best Homeschool Supplies
Over the years, we have collected some of the best and most exciting school supplies we use year in and year out. I also love purchasing a few fun treats for the kids and even myself each year. I also like checking over all our supplies at the end of the school year and stocking up on things we frequently use, so I don’t end up frustrated waiting for computer paper, glue sticks, or ink to arrive and postponing a lesson.
Homeschool supplies- The Essentials
Let’s talk about the big things that are investments for your homeschool, things that will help your homeschool to run smoothly and that you will use over and over for all aspects of your homeschool from year to year.
The Perfect Printer
If you have multiple children and you plan to use curriculum for multiple children, or if you have a lot of curriculum from the internet, you may want to invest in an all-in-one laser printer as ink costs will start to pile up; this is a good tip for your homeschool printing needs.
A Laptop or computer
Computers are pretty necessary when it comes to everything these days. If you want to take part in online classes or online curricula, you will want to ensure that you have a decent computer or laptop for homeschooling purposes. I have an extra laptop for the kids to use for homeschool classes and assignments. I wanted to ensure it was affordable and durable and had everything they needed to take part in classes. We found this fantastic HP laptop which was relatively affordable and of excellent quality.
Headphones
Headphones are essential when you have many people working in one room. To keep the peace and keep everyone focused on their tasks, headphones are a lifesaver. Through the years, we have been through a handful of headphones of all types. We have recently splurged on Samsung Earbuds because sometimes it’s worth it to splurge instead of constantly buying new headphones. However, these were for my older child as I feel she is responsible enough to care for them.
Bind Your Own Books
If you choose to bind your own books, a binding machine may be a reasonable option; it can be used with a wide variety of homeschool printables and printable curricula. I love this idea because it can save a fortune if you order bonded prints from a company.
Laminating Machine
If you choose to make flashcards, game cards, trading cards, book covers, or anything that you want durable, you may want to pick up a laminator. This is essential if you are teaching preschool and early elementary. I used it daily in those years but still use it now to add more fun and durability to our homeschool curriculum.
A Kindle, Audible, Library Card, and Amazon Prime
We love reading in our homeschool, and we have thousands of books that fill our home. I personally love enjoying books the old-fashioned way. However, as you progress through your homeschool journey, there is some magic with audiobooks and even ebooks (I sometimes think the non-homeschooled members of the family may freak out if I bring another book into this apartment.) Your children will most likely grow to devour books, and I highly recommend a Kindle because you can download an app from your library and take out ebooks and audiobooks for free, but I also have a subscription to audible because we love listening to audiobooks, and sometimes our library doesn’t have the titles we want available, or we don’t want to wait for popular titles to be available, or we are going to take longer than 21 days to complete the book. Another thing I love is Amazon Prime because I can order supplies, books, and whatever I need and get free next-day delivery. I can also download hundreds or thousands of books from Amazon with our Prime membership, and we also take advantage of some of the educational kids’ shows on Amazon Prime TV.
Electric Pencil Sharpner
There is nothing like a really good pencil sharpener. So many times, manual ones break and make a mess, especially with little kids. Having an electric one on hand makes keeping pencils sharp and in working order simple and quick.
More Homeschool Supplies
Of course, there are more things you can use in your homeschool, but I am a homeschool mom, and I know how overwhelming it can all be. Looking at lists of supplies, having a tight budget trying to figure out what you need, what can wait, or what can be purchased by extended family as gifts for holidays and birthdays (yes, a lot of homeschooling supplies can be purchased as such because some are just so much fun!) That is why I think breaking down supply lists is essential because it can be overwhelming. So this is a list of some essential items you will buy once or twice and use for all the years. I will share more lists for stationery supplies as well as subject-specific and organizational.
