Free Printable: Artists Worth Knowing, a Family Art Appreciation Pack

I made this because of a single moment on my couch.

I was reviewing an art curriculum, flipping through the artist anthology, when I landed on a full page for Frida Kahlo. A Mexican woman, given the same space and weight as Leonardo and Rembrandt. I grew up not seeing myself in the art I was taught to admire, so that page stopped me. It also gave me an idea. Every family should have a simple, no-pressure way to introduce their kids to artists worth knowing, including those who are too often left out.

So I built one, and you can grab it free below.

What is inside the pack

Six clean, printable pages designed to make a free homeschool art appreciation printable actually usable at any age:

  • A discovery checklist of 20 artists worth knowing, with where they are from and what they are known for, from Frida Kahlo and Hokusai to Gordon Parks, Harriet Powers, and Georgia O’Keeffe. There is a box to check off each one and blank lines to add your family’s own.
  • A reusable picture-study page you can print again and again, with simple prompts and a sketch box for your budding artist.
  • A how-to page that walks you through a five-step art appreciation rhythm.
  • A set of open-ended family discussion prompts that work whether your kid is five or fifteen.

No worksheets to grade. No art degree required. Just look, talk, and enjoy.

Who this is for

This is for you if:

  • You want to teach art appreciation but have no idea where to start.
  • You are juggling more than one age and need something the whole family can do together.
  • You care about representation and want your kids to see artists who look like them, and artists who do not.
  • You are short on time and want something open-and-go.

If you have ever written “art” on your homeschool plan and then quietly pushed it to next month, this little pack is for you. No guilt. Just a gentle start.

How to use it, even without a curriculum

Here is the whole method, and it stands completely on its own:

  1. Pick one artist from the checklist.
  2. Find one of their artworks online or in a library book.
  3. Look at it quietly together for two minutes. Just notice.
  4. Talk about it using the discussion prompts.
  5. Record it on a picture-study page.

Do that once a week, and you will have a real art appreciation habit by the end of the month. Mix your ages at one table. For little ones, the goal is simply to notice and enjoy. For older kids, dig into the artist’s life and the choices they made.

Want it planned out for you, week by week?

The pack is a beautiful start. If you would rather have the reading, the art, and the questions all done for you, that is exactly why I built it as a companion to my review of Beautiful Feet Books Art Appreciation. It is a literature-based family study for grades 5 to 12, with 91 artists, art cards, a teacher guide, and 64 lessons over two years. One purchase, one prep, your whole family at the table.

You can read my full, honest, secular review of it right here, including how our secular home adapts the faith-based parts. If you decide it is right for your family, you can shop the curriculum here, and code IHN26FS gets you free shipping on US orders through the end of July 2026.
