The Free Homeschool Unit Study Planner That Works for Every Age You’re Teaching

The Free Homeschool Unit Study Planner That Works for Every Age You’re Teaching

If you are homeschooling more than one kid, you already know the problem. You sit down to plan a unit study, and within five minutes, you are building two versions of everything. One for your teen. One for your tween. Different reading levels, different attention spans, different ideas of what counts as an interesting Tuesday.

I have been there for over a decade. My teen and my tween are years apart, and they have never once wanted the same thing out of a unit study. My teen wants depth and independence. My tween wants hands-on and a little bit of silliness. For a long time, I planned as if I were running two separate homeschools under one roof, and it wore me out.

What finally worked was not two planners. It was one planner with room for both of them to show up as who they actually are.

That is what this printable is. A free set of unit study planning pages for Science, Mathematics, History, and Language Arts, built simply enough that you can use the same page for a ninth grader and a fourth grader without forcing either one into the wrong box.

What Is Inside

This is a four-subject set, one page per subject: Science, Mathematics, History, and Language Arts. Every page follows the same layout, so you are never relearning a system mid-semester.

Each page includes:

  • A Topic line at the top, so you can name the unit clearly before you plan a single activity
  • A Notes section, wide open lines for whatever you need it to hold. Standards you are tracking, a reading level reminder, a note to yourself about what worked last time
  • A Books column, where you list read-alouds, reference texts, or grade-specific titles side by side
  • An Activities column, for hands-on work, labs, projects, or field-based learning
  • A Media column, for documentaries, podcasts, or videos tied to the unit

Every page is black-and-white, printer-friendly, and designed to photocopy cleanly if you want a stack of blank pages ready to go for the whole year.

Who This Is For

This planner was built for you if:

  • You are homeschooling kids at more than one age or stage, and you are tired of building separate plans for each one
  • You want a unit study structure that flexes instead of a rigid curriculum that assumes every kid learns the same way at the same pace
  • You are heading into back-to-school planning season and want one simple system before the year gets loud
  • You are newer to homeschooling and still figuring out what a unit study even looks like day to day

You do not need to be an experienced homeschooler to use this. You just need a subject, a topic, and about ten minutes.

How to Use It

Here is exactly how I use these pages in my own home, even if you never download a thing.

Start with the topic, not the age. Pick one topic per subject, something like “The Water Cycle” for Science or “Ancient Egypt” for History. Write it at the top of the page once.

Fill Books first, split by reader. List the read-aloud or shared text everyone will experience together. Then list a second, independent title for your older reader and a simpler one for your younger reader, right in the same column. You are not making two lists. You are making one list that holds two levels.

Let Activities do the differentiating. This is where ages naturally split without you having to plan two units. Your tween might build a model. Your teen might research and present. Both activities live on the same page, under the same topic, and both count.

Use Media as the connector. A shared documentary or video is one of the easiest ways to bring two different ages back to the same table after they have worked at their own levels. List it once, watch it together, and let each kid respond to it however fits their age.

Keep one page per topic, not per kid. This is the shift that changed everything for me. The page is not “my teen’s Science page” or “my tween’s Science page.” It is the Science page for this topic, and both of my kids show up on it differently. That one change cut my planning time down more than any curriculum switch ever did.
