Heritage Humanities Review: An Invaluable Resource for Homeschooling
As a homeschooling mom, I’m always looking for high-quality educational resources, especially ones that align with my goal of providing my children with a classical education grounded in Western values and logic. When I discovered Heritage Humanities, I knew I had struck gold. This incredible free website has quickly become one of my go-to resources, and I couldn’t wait to share it with all of you!
What is Heritage Humanities?
Heritage Humanities is an online library featuring over 100 classic books from the Western tradition. Their website explains that their mission is to help “future generations learn and understand this material (classic literature) with the belief that it will enrich their lives and enable them to better contribute to society as thoughtful individuals and citizens.”
I love how they are making these foundational works accessible to homeschool families like ours. As much as I value having physical books, our bookshelf space is limited. Heritage Humanities allows me to provide my kids with an academically rigorous education without purchasing and storing a huge physical library. It’s been a lifesaver!
Rigorous Categories
What impresses me most about Heritage Humanities is its carefully curated selection of texts. Currently, the site includes five main categories:
- Greece: Features works by Aristotle on politics, ethics, and logic
- Rome: Includes Cicero’s writings on the Roman Republic
- Judeo-Christian Theology: Offers works by Aquinas and Maimonides analyzing Aristotelian thought through a religious lens
- British Inheritance: Contains Blackstone on common law, Burke on political philosophy, and Adam Smith on economics
- Additional Electives: Fun extras like fables, mythology, poetics and more
My 14-year-old has been working through the Greece and Rome sections, and it’s gratifying to see her engaging with these challenging texts. She came to me the other day, excitedly pointing out connections she noticed between Aristotle and Cicero. Seeing her starting to grasp the influence of these ancient thinkers on Western culture is precisely why I’m so committed to this type of education.
User-Friendly Format
In addition to the fantastic book selection, I appreciate how easy Heritage Humanities makes it to access and use the texts. You can either read the books yourself or listen to an audio version. The listening feature highlights each word as it’s read aloud, which is excellent for learners who want to read along.
