Teaching High School Government in Your Homeschool

Homeschooling in New York can be challenging as we have a lot of rules and regulations. As my daughter gets closer and closer to high school, I have been trying out curricula that will work for our high school years. One subject that piqued our interest was government because, I mean, the world has been hyper-focused on government lately. We thought it would be great to get some insight into the overall history, structure, and government processes. Before we begin, please take a moment to pin this post to your homeschool board.

If you can’t tell I’m worried about high school, just a little bit, you can see it now. I am trying to prepare and see what is out there that will make this an easy and enjoyable experience. Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum has a plethora of curricula available for grades 7 through 12. They offer science, social studies, math, English, and electives. We chose to try out Principles and Precepts of Government, a workbook-based homeschool high school government curriculum. This curriculum can count as a half credit on the high school transcript.

Principles and Precepts of Government Explained

Principles and Precepts of Government provide students insight into the history and concepts of government: original patriarchal and proprietary systems, ‘divine right of kings’, empires, monarchies, dictatorships, oligarchies, theocracies, democracies, confederations, and republics.  Principles and Precepts of Government are designed to equip students with an understanding of the evolution of various forms of governance, and thereby gain an appreciation of the workings and myriad benefits afforded in their American Republic, the sacrifices to bring it to fruition, and the requirements of involvement to preserve it.

Principles and Precepts of Government Features

Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum takes an advanced subject and makes it digestible. The curriculum is broken down into multiple booklets. Each booklet is broken into chapters that aren’t overwhelmingly long for a high school senior. Most sections are about two to four pages. This makes reading manageable.

The curriculum offers QR codes in the material for added information. Having a code right in the text makes it simple for students to see connected media to expand on their learning information.

The teachers’ resource Kit makes it easy to check your students’ work, evaluate their writing, and administer section quizzes and chapter tests. It includes a table of contents for textbooks, activity book answer key with details and resources for grading their writing, section quizzes, chapter tests, quiz and chapter test answer keys.

Design of Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum

While the curriculum is manageable for students and teachers, one of the key features is the vocabulary boxes in each section. There is extensive new vocabulary when dealing with a new topic, such as government.  While the vocabulary is used in the text, it also is included in the vocabulary box on the side boxes of each section. Both words and definitions are provided.

My daughter took a study skills class last year and could see how beneficial it is in these advanced classes. Keeping your own notes while reading through the curriculum is a great way to create healthy study skills and understand the new information you are learning.
