Self-Care Challenge Day 1: The Mindful Shower (Reset Your Day in 10 Minutes)
“You can’t pour from an empty cup — and today, we’re filling yours one warm, peaceful shower at a time.”
Welcome to Day 1 of the Take Care of You Self-Care Challenge! I am so genuinely excited that you are here and that you’ve decided to show up for yourself today. That decision alone? It matters. Give yourself credit for it.
If you missed the introduction post, I’d encourage you to head over and read it first so you have the full picture of what this challenge is all about and can grab your free Self-Care Starter Kit. But if you’re already warmed up and ready to jump in, let’s do this!
I want to start by being completely honest with you. There was a season in my life where I found myself completely and utterly depleted. I was crying myself to sleep from exhaustion, drowning in negative self-talk, and running on fumes every single day. I was so busy pouring into everyone else that I had nothing left for myself. Sound familiar?
When I finally started paying attention to self-care, I noticed that this was a pattern shared by so many of us. Homeschool moms. Working moms. Single moms. We put ourselves last, make ourselves the very last priority, and then feel guilty when we hear we should be doing better. We overthink it. We assume self-care needs to be elaborate, time-consuming, or expensive.
It doesn’t. And today, I’m going to prove it.
Day 1 Activity: Get Washed — The Mindful Shower
I know. You might be laughing right now. “Christine, my self-care activity is taking a shower? That’s your big tip?”
Stay with me here, because there is something genuinely powerful about this one, especially when you approach it intentionally.
Most of us take showers on autopilot. We hop in, run through our mental to-do list, stress about the lesson plan we haven’t finished, replay the argument we had with our kid this morning, and hop out feeling basically the same way we went in. The shower happened, but we weren’t really there for it.
Today, we’re changing that. Today, you are going to take a shower (or a bath, whatever you prefer!) and be fully, completely, mindfully present for every single minute of it.
Why Mindfulness Makes All the Difference
Mindfulness simply means being present in the moment, fully aware of what is happening right now, without judgment and without your brain running off to tomorrow’s problems. And here’s the thing: it sounds simple, but for most of us, it takes real practice.
When you bring mindfulness to something as routine as a shower, something shifts. The running water becomes a sensory reset. The warmth relaxes your muscles and signals your nervous system to slow down. The act of caring for your body reminds you, most tangibly, that you matter.
Mindfulness doesn’t require a yoga mat or a meditation app. It just requires that you show up for yourself right where you are.
Research consistently shows that mindfulness practices, even brief ones, can reduce stress hormones, lower anxiety, improve mood, and help us feel more grounded and in control. And the beauty of the mindful shower is that it requires no extra time and no extra tools. You’re already doing it. You’re just going to do it differently.
How to Do Your Day 1 Mindful Shower
Here’s your step-by-step guide to making the most of your 10 minutes:
Step 1: Set the Scene
If your kids are awake, get them settled first. Put on a favorite show (a typical episode runs about 22–25 minutes — perfect!), give them a snack, or set them up with an activity. You deserve uninterrupted time, even if it’s brief.
If possible, lock the bathroom door. Put on a song or two that makes you feel good. Cover up any background noise that might pull your attention back out there.
Step 2: Step In and Breathe
As you step into the shower, take three deep, slow breaths. Feel the temperature of the water. Notice it, is it warm, hot, perfectly comfortable? Let yourself settle into that sensation before doing anything else.
Step 3: Be Present with Your Body
As you wash, pay attention. Notice the feeling of the water on your skin, the scent of your soap or shampoo, and the sound of the water. Be aware of your body, this body that carries you through every single day of homeschooling, caregiving, and showing up for everyone.
Step 4: Notice and Release
Thoughts will come. The car payment, the laundry, the curriculum you haven’t ordered yet, they will float in. That’s completely normal. The practice is simply to notice them and let them go. You can imagine each thought as a bubble that floats away, or just gently say to yourself: “Not right now. This time is mine.”
Step 5: Close with Gratitude
Before you step out, take one more slow breath and notice one small thing you’re grateful for. It can be as simple as hot running water, your health, or just the fact that you made time for this moment today.

The Benefits of a Mindful Shower for Homeschool Moms
Still not convinced this counts as real self-care? Here’s what ten intentional minutes under warm running water can actually do for you:
- Reduces cortisol (your stress hormone) and signals your body to relax
- Creates a mental boundary between “before” and “after”, a reset point in your day
- Reconnects you with your physical self, which many moms completely lose touch with
- Trains your brain to be more present, which carries into your homeschooling day
- Boosts mood, the warm water actually triggers a mild release of serotonin
- Gives you a moment of solitude, which is deeply restorative for introverts and extroverts alike
- Reminds you that you are a person, not just a parent, a teacher, a caregiver
Tips for Making It Work with Kids at Home
I know what you’re thinking: “This sounds amazing, but I have kids in the next room, and someone is definitely going to need me the second I step in.” Here are a few ways to make it happen:
- Use show time wisely, put on a 20-minute episode, and take your shower during it
- Nap time is golden. If you have a younger child, this is your window
- Early morning or after bedtime works well for older kids
- Older kids can be in charge for 10 minutes, give them a clear job, and let them practice independence
- Tell them: “Mama is having her self-care time. Unless someone is bleeding, I’ll be out in 10 minutes.” And mean it!
The point isn’t perfection. The point is the intention. Even if your shower is interrupted, you still tried. You still showed up. That matters.
Your Day 1 Challenge Recap
Take a 10-minute mindful shower or bath today. Be present. Let your thoughts float away. Take care of yourself.
That’s it. That’s Day 1.
When you’re done, I’d love for you to reflect on how it went, jot down, record a video, or even an audio recording. Did it feel strange to be so intentional about something so routine? Did you notice a shift in your mood afterward? Did you make it 10 whole minutes before someone knocked on the door? (No judgment, it’s a win either way!)
Make sure you grab your free Self-Care Starter Kit if you haven’t already. It has a tracker inside so you can check off each day as you complete it and jot down how you felt. Progress is powerful, even in tiny steps.
And Day 2 is coming very soon, we’re going to talk about journaling, and specifically about the magic of a good brain dump. Trust me, your brain will thank you.
