Take Care of You: The Self-Care Challenge Every Homeschool Mom Needs
Being a homeschooling parent is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do in your life. The moments of connection, discovery, and pride, watching your child read their first book, crack a math problem they thought was impossible, or light up over a topic they love, those are memories you would never trade for anything.
And then there are the other moments. The days that feel like an obstacle course of demands, messes, arguments, and exhaustion. The nights when you collapse into bed, wondering if you gave enough, or if you have anything left to give at all.
Here’s the truth: being a homeschooling parent multiplies every high and every low of parenthood. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, most of us have stopped taking care of ourselves. This post is your friendly, loving nudge to change that, and we have a FREE 6-Day Self-Care Challenge to make it easy and accessible for even the busiest moms.
“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”And mama, it’s time to fill yours.
How Are You Really Feeling?
Before we talk about self-care, let’s check in. How have you been feeling lately? Take a moment, be honest with yourself. Have any of these sounds familiar?
- Constant exhaustion, even after a full night of sleep
- Feeling frustrated or snapping at your kids more than usual
- A creeping sense of sadness, flatness, or feeling like you’re just going through the motions
- Forgetting things you would normally remember
- Physical symptoms like headaches, tight shoulders, or that all-too-familiar stress stomach
If you nodded at any of those, you are not alone, and you are not failing. These are signs that your body and mind are waving a little white flag. They’re asking you to slow down and pour something back into yourself.
Why Self-Care Isn’t Selfish (The Pitcher Analogy)
Let’s talk about why self-care has to come first, even before your kids, your partner, your lesson plans, and your laundry pile.
Imagine you have a large, beautiful pitcher. That pitcher is you. When your family, your students, your household, everyone comes to you for what they need, they’re filling their glasses from that pitcher. Now imagine the pitcher is empty. No matter how much you tip it, there’s nothing to give.
Self-care is what fills the pitcher. It’s the clean, cool water. It’s the right balance of ingredients that makes everything taste good. And here’s what so many of us forget: you cannot give your family, your children, your homeschool the very best of you if the pitcher is empty.
Taking care of yourself is not a luxury. It is not selfish. It is one of the most important things you can do as a parent.
“Taking care of yourself is an important part of taking care of your kids. You must come first, yes, even before your family.”
The 5 Categories of Self-Care for Homeschool Moms
Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and candles (though those count too!). True self-care tends to all the different parts of you. Here are the five categories to keep in mind as we work through this challenge:
1. Physical Self-Care
This means getting enough sleep, drinking water, eating nourishing foods, and moving your body. These aren’t just boxes to check; they are the foundation for everything else you do.
2. Emotional Self-Care
This involves acknowledging your feelings instead of pushing them down. Journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or simply allowing yourself to cry when you need to; all of this counts.
3. Relational Self-Care
Humans need connection. When you’re in contact with people who genuinely care about you, life’s challenges feel lighter. Schedule that coffee date. Make the phone call. You need your people.
4. Cognitive Self-Care
Your brain needs nourishment, too! Reading something you enjoy, learning a new skill, or stimulating your curiosity is a form of self-care that is often overlooked by moms who spend so much energy nurturing their children’s minds.
5. Spiritual Self-Care
This is about connecting to something bigger than your daily to-do list. Whether that’s meditation, prayer, time in nature, or a quiet walk, this kind of care broadens your sense of self and brings perspective.
Introducing the Take Care of You Self-Care Challenge
I know exactly what you’re thinking right now: “This sounds amazing, but I do NOT have time for this.”
I hear you. I was there too, completely depleted, crying from exhaustion, drowning in the demands of homeschooling and caregiving and life. And here’s what I learned the hard way: it only takes 10 minutes a day to start turning things around.
That’s why I created this challenge: to make self-care accessible to all of us. No expensive retreats. No elaborate plans. Just 10 intentional minutes each day to restore your heart, rekindle your passion, and remember who you are as a person, not just as a parent.
The challenge runs for 6 days, and each day focuses on a single, simple self-care activity. Here’s a peek at what’s coming:
- Day 1: Get Washed — Mindful shower or bath to de-stress and reset
- Day 2: Journal It Out — A brain dump to clear your mental load
- Day 3: Practice Gratitude — Shift your focus to what’s going right
- Day 4: Get Moving — Simple physical activity to boost your energy
- Day 5: Treat Yourself — Something just for you, no guilt allowed
- Day 6: Get Creative — Unlock your imagination and have fun
You can do this challenge alongside your kids, during naptime, or in those precious 10 minutes while they’re watching a show. There are no rules, no perfection required, just a commitment to showing up for yourself.
Quick Tips to Make Self-Care a Daily Habit
Starting is the hardest part. Here are a few ways to make self-care stick:
- Put it on your schedule like any other appointment, because it is one.
- Start small. Ten minutes is all you need to begin.
- Include your kids when alone time isn’t possible. A family dance party counts as movement and joy.
- Let go of guilt. You cannot pour from an empty pitcher.
- Follow the “rule of three”; always have three things on your horizon that you’re looking forward to.
- Savor, don’t just do. Whether it’s sipping your morning coffee or going for a walk, be present in it.
