Teaching Study Skills with Mr. D Math
You may be reading this and thinking, why do you need to teach study skills? If you are a homeschooler, you may be aware that our children don’t typically take a ton of notes, and their study skills may be off compared to children who go to traditional school. That being said, my daughter has started Mr. D Math’s Study Skills class, and I am learning a thing or two that I wish I learned in school. Please take a moment to pin this post before discussing Mr. D Math’s Study Skills class.
Did You Learn Study Skills Growing Up?
Did you learn study skills when you were a child or teen? Skills that would help you not just in school but throughout your life? I wasn’t as lucky everything I practice I picked up through experimentation, and it wasn’t an easy journey. I am so grateful to have found Mr. D Math and their Study Skills course to help my children learn powerful tools to help them study.
Mr. D Math Study Skills
Mr. D Math is an online math curriculum that offers both live and self-paced classes. My daughter recently enrolled in the self-paced Mr. D Math Pre-Algebra class we recently shared here. However, she wanted to try a live online class as well, and Mr. D Math Study Skills was the class she chose.
Mr. D Math 8 Steps to Powerful Studying class is a 16-week class. Each week there are video assignments as well as reading and printables. The class is organized well and supportive to both the student and facilitator. The class has been easy to navigate and surprisingly fun.
What is covered in the 16-week course?
- pre-learning for classes and taking effective notes on written text
- maximizing class time and taking effective lecture notes
- processing notes to make the most of them as a study tool
- individual studying to master difficult material
- group study to supplement and clarify material
- pre-testing
- maximizing test performance
- reviewing tests effectively
Study Skills are Valuable
At first, my daughter wasn’t sure how important of a class this was. But once she jumped into it, with me alongside her, she noticed she could use these skills in all areas of her life. She writes her own blog, and she even sees the benefits of these skills when planning her posts.
She knows that I am always taking notes, whether it is from meetings at work, meetings, and events for my business, or simply reading books. I am always writing notes, making plans, and learning, and I want my children to grow up with the same excitement for learning, no matter how old they are or what they are doing.
Therefore, I am learning right alongside her, listening to the videos and lectures, and reading the coursework to pick up some great study skills along the way.
Self-directed Learning with Online Classes
As my children are getting older and I am getting busier and busier, I have been shifting how our homeschool works. She is in sixth grade now (advanced sixth grade); therefore, my daughter takes on more of her homeschooling herself. Online classes have been an amazing tool to help her branch out to do more learning independently. With Mr. D’s classes, not only is my daughter able to work at her own speed, but she can also take control of her learning more than she has been. No more listening to me. She has others who want to see her succeed. When children take ownership of their learning and work, it helps them to be more accountable and intentional with what they are doing. She knows that she doesn’t only have to turn assignments into me, but she wants to do this for herself.
While my daughter is in control for the most part and she needs to be more self-directed than she has been I am still here for her to support her and work with her as much as she needs. It is a balance act.
