The Magic of Karen Katz’s Where is Baby’s Pumpkin

Karen Katz has created countless beloved books for the youngest readers, and Where is Baby’s Pumpkin? stands out as a Halloween favorite. The story follows an adorable baby on a quest to find her missing pumpkin. Through bright, colorful illustrations and interactive lift-the-flap features, children join Baby’s search throughout the house.

Is the pumpkin under the leaves? Behind the curtain? Under the bed? Each flap reveals delightful surprises, a friendly ghost, a witch’s hat, cute bats, and candy apples, building anticipation until Baby finally discovers her pumpkin and prepares for trick-or-treating. The final flap showcases a Halloween extravaganza that delights young readers every single time.

Sensory Exploration

Create a Halloween sensory bin filled with dried corn, small plastic pumpkins, toy bats, and other themed items. Hide letters or numbers for children to find while exploring textures.

Real Pumpkin Investigation

Visit a pumpkin patch or purchase pumpkins for hands-on science. Measure circumference, estimate weight, count seeds, and explore the lifecycle of pumpkins from seed to jack-o-lantern.

Dramatic Play

Set up a trick-or-treat dramatic play area where children practice social skills, counting, and sorting as they pretend to go door-to-door collecting treats.

Movement Activities

Create a Halloween movement game where children hop like bats, float like ghosts, or waddle like pumpkins. This builds gross motor skills while burning energy.

Art Extensions

Beyond the included activities, try:

  • Painting with pumpkins cut in half
  • Creating bat silhouettes with black paper
  • Making ghost handprints
  • Designing witch hats from construction paper cones

The Featured Craft: 3D Paper Pumpkin

One of the highlights of this learning adventure is creating a three-dimensional paper pumpkin. This craft reinforces:

  • Measuring and drawing with ruler and pencil
  • Cutting skills along marked lines
  • Following multi-step directions
  • Understanding spatial relationships as flat strips becomes round

The finished pumpkin becomes a proud decoration that children created themselves, boosting confidence and providing tangible evidence of their hard work.

Supplies for the 3D Paper Pumpkin Craft

  • Orange and Green card stock (you could also do it with construction paper, but it won’t be as sturdy)
  • Scissors
  • Brass Fasteners
  • Black Marker
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Instructions for the 3D Paper Pumpkin Craft

  1. First, using your ruler, measure and draw notch marks about  1 1/2 inches apart on the top and bottom of your orange cardstock.
  2. When this is complete, connect the notch marks from the top and the bottom. Let your little one practice their cutting by cutting along the lines. You can help them and make sure you use safety scissors.
  3. Once all your strips are out, using your black marker, take two strips and draw the face in the center of them.
  4. Once that is complete, using a brass fastener, poke each strip onto it. Make sure you keep the face together and facing outward.
  5. Once you put all the strips on and spread them out, kind of like a star formation, all flat, bend the fastener to keep the strips in place. Using your green cardstock, cut out a rectangle or sketch and cut out a leaf shape.
  6. Attach this to a new fastener, then attach it to the top of the orange strips, just like you did on the bottom.
  7. Once they are all attached it will look round, like a pumpkin, make sure the fastener is closed. Ta-Dah! You have your very own paper pumpkin.
